Starcraft II Review

StarCraft II is the long awaited sequel to the 1998 real time strategy game released by Blizzard. Years in development, this game, subtitled Wings of Liberty, is only the first in a trilogy of StarCraft II games. While multiplayer includes all three races, Wings of Liberty's single player campaign is solely focused on the Terrans (The humans), and Jim Raynor's rebellion against the Dominion Empire.

StarCraft II's single player is absolutely great! The story is engaging, and puts more of the focus than the first game. Instead of a briefing between each mission with talking heads, and the occasional cut scene here or there, there is a well fleshed out adventure game style hub for your mission selection. Here you can talk to various characters to learn more of the story, and choose your next mission to undertake. That's right, instead of a completely linear path to take in the story, you can select which mission to do next, unlocking technology in the order you see fit. And speaking of technology, research and earning money from missions allows you to upgrade units, and research new units and upgrades from the hub aboard your ship, all of which carry over to your missions, despite which mission it is. Overall, the single player is much improved and definitely worth the price of the game alone.

Multiplayer is the same story as the first game. You select Protoss, Zerg, or Terran and participate in a skirmish match. The matchmaking is better, however. The game pairs you up with someone of a similar skill level so you don't get decimated every match you play by someone way more skilled than you. Additionally, the Battle.net service Blizzard provides is greatly improved, letting players create profiles and have a friend list. You can even chat with players in other Blizzard games while you play, such as World of Warcraft! Blizzard didn't change much with the multiplayer, but this is in no way a bad thing. The first game really nailed the RTS multiplayer, and you don't fix whats not broke.

StarCraft II is an amazing game. The story is engaging and makes you want to continue the game. All of the characters are interesting. The game is fun, and well balanced for difficulty. For anyone who is a fan of RTS games, picking up this game is a no-brainer. And even if you aren't, StarCraft II is newbie friendly enough to get you hooked on the genre. StarCraft II is a must buy.
