E3: Microsoft Keynote Recap

Modern Warfare 3
A gameplay demo was shown. The player was underwater, scuba with a squad of Navy Seals. After placing a mine on the tail of a submarine, the player rose above the water, showing a New York City under siege. The seals then boarded the sub, taking out enemies along the way. After launching some missles from the sub, an exciting chase scene on boat occurs, ending the demo after driving the raft into the back of a helicopter and flying away. Overall, it looked pretty badass. Very cinematic and Michael Bay-esque seems to be tone for the single player campaign.

Mass Effect 3 with Kinect
The rumored Kinect features for Mass Effect 3 were revealed. Players can speak the lines of dialogue shown on the speech wheel to select what you want to say, rather than select it with a controller. Also, in combat, players can order squad mates commands using their voice. The demoer would say things like “Garrus, take cover ahead!” and the character in the game did so. Or “Liara, use shockwave!” and again, the character did so. It appeared to work very well, and Brittany and I are super excited to get our hands on it.

EA Sports Game using Kinect
Peter Moore announced that four EA Sports titles will feature Kinect support coming soon. Madden, PGA, FIFA, and another unannounced game.

Ghost Recon: Future Soldier Kinect support
Ghost Recon: Future Soldier will have Kinect support. Showing off the weapon customization, the demo showed a player moving through the weapon, breaking it apart, and selecting different parts for his gun, all using his hands. He then did so using his voice. Commands such as “randomize” or “optimize for long range” modified the weapon for that use on the fly. Additionally, the player reached behind his back, as if to grab a weapon, which took him into a shooting range. Holding his left hand out in front of him, he could aim his gun. Opening his fist into a spread fingers position on his right hand fired the gun. It actually seemed to work really well. It’s definitely got my interest.

XBOX System Announcements
Fall Update: The fall update for the 360 features several new features, listed below. The update will also change the dashboard to look more like the windows phone, and looks very clean and easy to navigate.

YouTube on XBOX: The XBOX will now feature streaming YouTube support on the dashboard.

Streaming Live TV: This fall, you’ll be able to stream live TV onto your XBOX via internet on XBOX Live. No announcements were made about specifics of channels or pricing, although it was said local channels would be available.

Bing Search: Using your voice and Kinect, you can now use Bing to search for anything on your XBOX. Saying “XBOX Bing Harry Potter” will bring up all movies, music, and games found on your XBOX as well as for download on XBOX live on one screen. This feature will be very cool and seemed like we’ll get a lot of use out of it.

UFC Fights: UFC Fights will be coming live to XBOX Live. You’ll be able to interact with features on a limited level while you watch the fight, such as predict a winner or place bets with friends.

Ryse for Kinect
Ryse from Crytek looks like a first person game set in the Roman Empire. It will use Kinect to track movements for sword battles, and seems pretty violent. It wasn’t clear if what was shown was gameplay or not, but knowing Crytek, the game will look fantastic.

Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary
Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary was finally announced. The long rumored remake of the first Halo game looked very impressive. Obviously using the Halo: Reach engine, it showed players using assassination moves. With XBOX Live support, this update looks pretty impressive. I can’t wait to get my hand on it and play through an updated version of the original classic.

Fable: The Journey for Kinect
Peter Molyneux announced a new Fable game. This game is first person, and controlled entirely using the Kinect. The demo showed the player steering a horse by its reigns and blasting Hobs with magic spells. The player customized the magic by swirling energy around his hands and stretching lighting out to form a spear, and then throwing it. If it controls well, this game could be pretty fun.

Seasame Street: Once Upon a Monster
Tim Schafer showed off his newest game, the educational Once Upon a Monster. A “father and son” played the game, where they had to make monster faces and be scary, as well as catch fire flies. The game actually looks really cool, and is supposed to be educational to teach children by playing.

Kinect Disneyland Adventures
A collection of mini-games based off rides in Disneyland is coming this fall to XBOX Kinect. The silly kids playing it on stage looked like they were enjoying it, but it looked like another Kinect Adventures with a Disney theme.

Star Wars Kinect
Seemingly a collection of mini-games, players control a Rancor, a Jedi, a podracer, or a starfighter with their hands and voice. The demo didn’t seem to be working that well, but here’s hoping that they get all the kinks worked out before it releases. The Star Wars fan in me really wants this to be good. But seriously, who’s ever heard a Jedi go “Lightsaber on!” when entering a fight… come on.

Gears of War 3
Gears of War 3 was shown off by Cliffy B and Ice-T. The game looks great, with huge set pieces and fast action. One player got in a mech to use, and the other took cover behind it. There was a lot going on, and it looked like it’s going to be great fun this fall when it releases.

Kinect Fun Labs
Updating new features to the Kinect, Fun Labs is available now on XBOX 360. Showing off body scanning, the demoer scanned her body into the Kinect, and created an avatar looking just like her, clothes and all. Additionally, new function of finger tracking has been added to Kinect. This was showed off by a picture taking game, where the player drew using his finger around his body in 3D. Finally, object scanning was demoed. A player held up a stuffed animal, which Kinect scanned the front and back of, creating a digital puppet that can be played with.

Dance Cental 2
Dance Central 2 was announced. All previous songs from the first game, as well as DLC, will transfer over. Also announced was that the game will have a two player mode, allowing two players to dance at the same time. Now Brittany and I can break it down together, while getting a good workout.

Kinect Sports: Season 2
Kinect Sports: Season 2 was announced. Showing off Skiing, Football, and Golf, this is just another collection of mini-games for your Kinect.

Halo 4
In a surprise ruined just before the show started, Halo 4 was announced. Apparently the first in a new Halo Trilogy, the trailer showed Master Chief waking from stasis to Cortana’s voice as the ship around him falls apart. Coming out to space, the trailer ends with his breaking ship overlooking a large portal or gateway or something. Mysterious. You know I’m excited.

Other Announcements
Minecraft is coming to XBOX this Winter with Kinect Support.

Forza 4 Trailer shown. Pretty impressive, graphically. Has Kinect Support.

How Microsoft did:

Matt I think they did great. They got me interested in Kinect again, and seem to be shifting a focus to the hardcore with Kinect. A lot of these games have me excited, but Kinect seems to be hit or miss with how it works. Hopefully they can get it right and these games will be great. Also, I’m really looking forward to the new dashboard features. And live TV, oh man!

Brittany I was hoping for more console type games, and less Kinect stuff.
